Reason Patch a Day
Patch me a river Thor
This thingy was done in less then 5 minutes... its a thor patch, connected the Step sequencer to the notes to be triggered, and go wild on the position thingy inside the 2 wavetables (Mixed Waves 3). The trick I am doing here is that both positions to the exact opposite of one another. Making it a very rich sound thingy to play with.

Reverse Filtering Patch
A simple technique, yet I rarely use it. The idea is to take a 'pad' and use twice a similar setup. In this case, I am using 2 different malstroms for this purpose. The idea is to create a sweeping filter where one goes 'upwards' and the other goes 'downwards'. In most cases one could stick with using a simple lp12 filter to do that and make one go up and the other go down.To make it a bit more distinctive in this case, I am using a Bandpass filter instead for one of the two.
Pads like these would be great to use inside ambient tracks, since most of them would be more or less be based on pads. And since this one goes pretty heavy on the resonance, there isn't much room for some heavy lead orso... ehm.. well, if you would filter out the hardness that is.

Basic Trance Lead
Here's a bit of a combinator patch I wanted to use yesterday evening inside a song. However, the song never got finished, and I doubt it will be. So, I am posting this patch as a patch rather then making a song for it ;)Sucks sometimes that you have the right tools, but for some reason everything you try to do it just does not work out. Ah well... new day, new changes... Lets make some more music :D

goa basslines
Here's a set of 'RNS' files that I used for the GOA trance like Basslines + Kicks videos. These songs contain a series of Basslike patches. Most often I used a subtractor. But it can be done with the Malstrom or Thor aswell.Have fun

Growler Thor
Here's a patch I have used for the intro of Stereo Separation part 3. It is a single thor patch, with a little bit of a pitch change in the beginning of one the patches. It's pretty straight forward at that point. The big difference lies in the stereo setup in this case.I have been explaining alot of these techniques in my last 3 parter which I have posted on youtube last night.
Since of lately I haven't payed much attention to this 'patch' section, but then again, I also have been uploading more then one video per day recently ;) Call it 'tutorial per day'.. lol

Basic Kickdrum Template
What makes a good kickdrum? How did you make that kick?! That kick is awesome! These are the questions I often get from many videos i post on Youtube. Ok, with the exceptional 'Your sound is weak' comments, but I'll not get into that. The point is, there is no real definition of a "good" kickdrum. The problem with kickdrums (and I am talking about the main electro genres like House, techno, Trance etc) is that the kick itself is actually nothing.
If you do it right, then you should make a kick drum that fits inside the song (and not the otherway around). Most people don't understand that, that is probably why I can make a good kickdrums, and other people don't (yeah, mister cocksucker at your service right here ;)).
The problem with the drum itself is that it is often based on a series of elements that makes it kick and pound at the same time:
- the snappy startpoint
- The whoom effect
- The oomph effect
All these three together make the kick, however the whoom and oomph effect are going hand in hand with... the bassline. The snappy startpoint goes hand in hand with the hihats. Case and point, it isn't just the kick that makes the song (duh!)
While struggling with it, I made a template. This template I made to play on D# notes and it could probably fit on C and A aswell (but haven't tried it yet), but most often those 3 usually work well in conjunction with the bassline perspective.
The trick with this template however, it works on multiple levels, and can be altered accordingly. It has 6 channels on Redrum 1, and 2 channels on Redrum 2. Why so many, because it is a layered to the max.
Redrum 1: Channel 1 and 2. This is the heavy presence part. With the tone reduced it only goes Whoom (downwards low). With the tone higher, the bassdrum itself becomes more present.
Redrum 1: Channel 6 and 7. These are the low ends. And I mean... the real looooow ends. They are not really present by ear, but they cause the oomph effect.
Redrum 1: Channel 9. This is the metronome for the hihat to play along. It causes the short 'snap' at the beginning, and can be used to tune in the hihats.
Redrum 1: Channel 10. This is the presence tone (by default). It causes most of the 'tick' since it is a high pitched tone by default. The drum is short and picky. And should also be in tune with the hihat most likely.
Redrum 2: Channel 1 and 2, this is the fillup. To shape the drum different.
Offcourse, each channel can be altered etc. However, please take care in tweaking the pitch... because pitch changes can have a drastic effect on kickdrums like these!
Have fun

Chirping Lead (Electro House)
Today I am posting a lead which I have been using inside on of my own Electro House songs. The sound is pretty sharp, and solid and jumps right out inside the song I made back then. But then again, it is a patch. One may find different tweaks to make it sound different again. The main automation I did with the original track was based on the Filter frequency and the Decay. Since these were automated directly inside the subtractor, I didn't program them inside the combinator patch directly.
One might get alot of teaks by adjusting the velocity on this one. The filter is set on BandPass, and it gets very dynamic just by altering the velocity range on this one.
Have fun

Sound Effect Test case
Here's more or less an experimental thingy rather then being a patch of its own. I am trying to create a dynamic sound effect and make it move through the brain at the same time.I hope it kind of works. Basic idea is that it should to the right and then later on more to the back right.

Reason 4 patch day
A Reason 4 patch per day
Reason 4 patches are fun to create. Even while I have tons of experience on the ground of making new stuff, I still try to discuss most of the features of Reason 4 till this day. Most of the articles I write are pretty large, and basicly explain a lot of stuff in more detail (for example Sound design in Reason 4 is a huge topic that almost takes me a week per article to write). Yet, sometimes I just want to relax a bit, write a patch of one or two just to kill some time.
I prefer not to go too much in detail about what I am trying to create, or how I create them... Sometimes I might explain a few things on what is happening over here with certain patches made for Reason 4. Without a doubt, the combinator is my ideal choice. Since I can stack as much as I like, however, I want to try to assemble as much as I can, and update this 'blog' on a more frequent basis. So, I hope you enjoy these patches, as much as I enjoy creating these patches made for Reason 4 (sorry lads, no Reason 3 or lesser this time).
